My latest read, behind-the-scenes peek, book cover reveal, and special opportunity

Dear friends,

I've been burying myself in the world of romance and really enjoying my time there. Who doesn't love a happy ending?

A happy ending and getting to know a cast of characters it's easy to fall in love with. That's what I've found in my latest read (OK, my latest listen...)

I'd like to introduce you to Christina Dudley

Christina writes traditional Regency romance—read: very sweet—which is close to what I'm writing at the moment. I love her setting! It's not London and the ton, but the ecclesiastical environs of Winchester—a place I happen to have a little personal history with. Her series The Ellsworth Assortment centers on one family of five children whose patriarch keeps remarrying when his wives die.

The first of these is Tempted by Folly. And no, I didn't choose it because the cover color-coordinates with my palette!

If you love Jane Austen and want more characters and small-town Regency life, I recommend Christina's books.

What I've been writing, and publication news

I've discovered—no, I actually always knew it—that I am deeply unhappy unless I'm writing. I've just finished editing the second novel in my Double-Dilemma Romance series, The Soprano's Daring Duke.

Here's the blurb:

A princess with a scandalous secret. A duke desperate for a wealthy bride. A debutante torn between duty and passion.
Newly widowed Princess Adelheid Kinsky thought she was free—until she learns of her abusive late husband’s final betrayal. The son she believed dead, the illegitimate child of a forbidden love, still lives. To secure his future, she must marry within a month—without revealing the truth. Her best prospect? The Duke of Hartland, a notorious rake drowning in debt.
Meanwhile, Hartland sets his sights on Olivia Fontenoy, an heiress whose fortune could solve all his problems. But innocent Olivia dreams of music, not marriage, and seizes the chance to perform in disguise at the King’s Theatre—unwittingly ensnaring everyone she knows in scandal.
As deception and desire collide, Olivia finds herself drawn to Hartland’s closest friend, the quiet yet passionate Marquess of Lewiston—a man who offers her something far more profound than mere security. And for Adelheid, an unexpected alliance may hold the key to her dreams.
With a surprising ending worthy of grand opera, The Soprano’s Daring Duke is a sweeping Regency tale of love, risk, and the courage to defy expectations.

Drumroll please, here's the cover:

I'm afraid you'll have to wait a bit to read this one. I have some work to do on it as yet, including the final proofread (we all hate typos). As of right now, I'm scheduling this to release over the summer. I will be offering my list members the opportunity to win a paperback copy, however!

And having basically finished the writing process for that book, I'm onto the next. I've started my holiday novella, as yet unnamed. The progress/behind-the-scenes peek I mentioned?

Last night I had an epiphany about the story, which has been causing me some consternation. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but suffice it to say that it involves not one, not two, but three romance tropes:

  • Love at first sight
  • Enemies to lovers
  • Forced proximity

And you'll revisit characters from the first two books, including Pauline and Mr. Gordon—fun will be had!

Read The Dressmaker's Secret Earl for free!

In the meantime, here's the opportunity for members of my list: You can get a free review copy of The Dressmaker's Secret Earl at Booksprout.

Why am I giving ebooks away like that? Because reviews are important. Honest reviews, by readers who are not friends and family. The deal is that you get the book free in exchange for your review, which you post on Goodreads and Amazon (once the book is live on April 8).

That's all the news I have for now—aside from the fact that I'm doing my first in-person book event tomorrow! In honor of Read Across America week I'm a guest at a local clothing store's wine and non-alcoholic spirits club popup. (For local members of the list: it's Suger on Washington Street in Biddeford, from 5–8pm.)

Thanks for reading, and I hope you're having a good week!

Susanne

P.S. You can still snag your free copy of my novella, Miss Winthrop's Vanishing Viscount! Remember to use password Winthrop2025.

News & Musings from Susanne Dunlap Dear Reader, For some time now, you've been accustomed to hearing about my Regency romance series, Double-Dilemma Romance. In fact, book 4 in the series—The Falconer's Lost Baron—will be out on December 1! But—call me crazy—something about the season, about the coming winter and the glorious changing leaves of autumn, made me look back to my Medieval trilogy, The Orphans of Tolosa. I decided to give it new life, for a number of reasons. Reason #1: These were...

Covers of Emilie's Voice, The Musician's Daughter, The Academie, and In the Shadow of the Lamp, the books of mine that were included in the Anthropic settlement.

News & Musings from Susanne Dunlap Dear Reader, Before you hop over to whichever side of the generative AI fence you tend to feel comfortable on, I'd like to share with you how I manage to be on both sides of that hot-button issue. And I'm frankly not in the least uncomfortable about it. First, four of my books were pirated and used to train Claude.ai. If Anthropic had actually purchased the books, I might just have gone, "Eh. So what." That's because the nature of LLM (large language model)...
