I've made a thing...and a month until Book Five

News & Musings from
Susanne Dunlap

Dear Reader,

I have been on quite a journey in the past couple of years. I changed genres—from historical fiction to historical romance—and had to learn some new things about publishing and reaching readers as a result. I also had to relearn much that I thought I already knew.

In these past few weeks I suddenly realized that I could share my hard-earned knowledge and experience with other authors. It became clear to me that I have something of value to offer writers of genre fiction (romance, mystery/crime, thriller, science fiction, fantasy, horror) who want to get their books into the right readers' hands.

So I made something—and I'm offering it to this list first. Introducing:

There’s no shortage of free information about self-publishing online—but most of it never explains how early publishing choices shape whether readers ever find or trust your book.

Publishing Without Panic is an online course that doesn’t add more tips to the pile or push you through a checklist of “do this, then do this.” Instead, it shows you how the publishing process actually works from the inside out—and why it pays to take the time to publish well.

You’ll learn why publishing decisions exist, what they affect, and—crucially—when they matter. The course connects those decisions to real outcomes: reader recognition, discoverability, and long-term viability in a crowded marketplace.

The goal isn’t just to get your book uploaded. It’s to give it a genuine chance to reach the right readers.

Want some hands-on help deciding how to publish your book? Come to my next workshop.

Indie publishing is on my mind these days, and I'm doing another 3-hour workshop for Writers in Progress on March 7, 9:30am–12:30pm, that will walk attendees through some of the decisions you need to make about which publishing choice is right for you.

It's an opportunity to dig in deeper on your own project, get some feedback, and ask specific questions. Workshop size is limited, so if you're interested, register soon.

Only a month until The Teacher's Noble Heart is out!

This is your periodic reminder that preorders are good for the Amazon algorithm—and deeply appreciated by me! If you're an ebook reader, it's so easy to preorder a book and have it delivered to your Kindle device on publication day.

And as I said, I will be SO grateful!

Since February is a month traditionally associated with love (thank you, St. Valentine), it's the perfect time to read feel-good books where the right people end up together.

But people have mixed feelings about this in-between month. I always loved it because it's my birthday month. I wonder how I would feel if it weren't?

A fun, quick poll for my subscribers!

At least the days are getting longer up here in the northern hemisphere...

In the meantime, happy reading and writing 😊.

Susanne

Cover of The Teacher's Noble Heart, book 5 in the Double-Dilemma romance series by Susanne Dunlap

News & Musings from Susanne Dunlap Dear Reader, Gulp! Only a week until launch day for The Teacher's Noble Heart, book five in my Double-Dilemma Romance series. Book five!!! I'm kind of gobsmacked when I think that The Dressmaker's Secret Earl, the first book in the series, was published less than a year ago. I started writing it months before that, of course, but I'm still amazed at how these romances have poured out of me, as if they were hiding in my heart and just waiting for their chance...

News & Musings from Susanne Dunlap Dear Reader, Before I get into Book 5 promotion mode (publication is less than two weeks away), I wanted to share something with you that I mentioned briefly in my previous email. As I said, I'm now offering an online indie publishing course, Publishing Without Panic. Why? Because taking the leap into self-publishing is a bit scary—even though there are lots of resources online to help you do it. Often they simply tell you what to do without telling you why...
